Ticking the Boxes

What a relief.

This time last week, Warrior Nation was under attack. The noises were deafening, the opposition relentless and the suffering immense. We were weak, vulnerable, and some saw it as a perfect opportunity to come in for the kill.

Then came team-naming Tuesday, and the return of Simon Mannering gave us hope. As a veteran of many battles, and a man with great courage and commitment, he was someone we could believe in, someone who we knew would fight hard to restore honour to the Warrior name. House of Cards

On Saturday night at Pepper Stadium, it took the Warriors just forty minutes to craft a work of absolute beauty. Guided by the steady hands of Kieran Foran, they built their biggest lead of the season, stacking up try after try until the score grew to 28–6. It was a mixture of precision,

Hard-earned

Boy, did we need those two points.

As Mitchell Pearce slotted the field goal that put the Roosters ahead with 5 minutes to go, it felt like deja vu all over again. Spirit levels were as damp as our clothes as we struggled to comprehend how a roster this talented could be so far off the playoff pace by the representative round. Frustration boiled over into gasps and groans as another unstructured play broke down.

And then, to the surprise of almost everyone at the ground, including the Sky Sports commentary team, Ashley Klein, the marvellous man that he is, pressed his whistle to his lips. It didn’t matter that no one really knew what had happened, all that mattered was that Ashley, wonderful Ashley, was pointing to the posts.

It’s Not Dark Yet, But It’s Gettin’ There

Another week, another loss. Familiar shadows of sorrow are falling on Warrior Nation. A season that started slowly, gathered momentum and eventually promised so much, is now hanging by the murmur of a prayer.

The trip to North Queensland was always going to be tough, but the men from Mt Smart made things extra hard for themselves. In the first half especially, dropped ball after dropped ball piled on the pressure and the Cowboys took full advantage. For the second consecutive week, the match was all but over by halftime. You simply cannot win NRL games with only 40 per cent of possession, particularly away from home against the defending champions.
